Criticality analysis of activity networks under interval uncertainty

This paper reconsiders the PERT scheduling problem when information about task duration is incomplete. We model uncertainty on task durations by intervals. With this problem formulation, our goal is to assert possible and necessary criticality of the different tasks and to compute their possible earliest starting dates, latest starting dates and floats. This paper puts together various results ...

An Algorithm to Obtain Possibly Critical Paths in Imprecise Project Networks

We consider criticality in project networks having imprecise activity duration times. It is well known that finding all possibly critical paths of an imprecise project network is an NP-hard problem. Here, based on a method for finding critical paths of crisp networks by using only the forward recursion of critical path method, for the first time an algorithm is proposed which can find all pos...

Self-Organized Criticality in Developing Neuronal Networks

Recently evidence has accumulated that many neural networks exhibit self-organized criticality. In this state, activity is similar across temporal scales and this is beneficial with respect to information flow. If subcritical, activity can die out, if supercritical epileptiform patterns may occur. Little is known about how developing networks will reach and stabilize criticality. Here we monito...

Being Critical of Criticality in the Brain

Relatively recent work has reported that networks of neurons can produce avalanches of activity whose sizes follow a power law distribution. This suggests that these networks may be operating near a critical point, poised between a phase where activity rapidly dies out and a phase where activity is amplified over time. The hypothesis that the electrical activity of neural networks in the brain ...

Self-organized criticality in neural network models

Information processing by a network of dynamical elements is a delicate matter: Avalanches of activity can die out if the network is not connected enough or if the elements are not sensitive enough; on the other hand, activity avalanches can grow and spread over the entire network and override information processing as observed in epilepsy. Therefore, it has long been argued that neural network...
